There are many simple steps that you can take to ensure your trekking shoes lasts for many years.

How to clean trekking shoes

Here are 5 Simple Tips to Help Keep your Trekking Shoes Clean

  1. Wipe down

It’s always best to wipe down trekking shoes with a damp cloth as soon as you get back home. When people forget to do this, the mud tends to cake on to the shoes. This could eventually reduce the life of the shoe by affecting the fabric. You might have to use more pressure to remove hard dirt that might slightly wear out your shoes.

  1. Use a Toothbrush

For difficult to remove stains and grime, spot treatment with an old toothbrush with a mild detergent and some water works best. Ensure the toothbrush is soft and not to damage the shoe.

The toothbrush can also be safely used on parts of the shoe like the ‘Upper’ to remove any mud.

If your shoe is very dirty, don’t hesitate to remove the laces and use more water. But ensure they are dry before storing to avoid mold.

  1. Air dry

This is also another crucial step. Loosen the laces, extend the tongue and air dry the shoe. Keep the shoe in shade out of harsh sunlight. Let it naturally dry out and remove any moisture that may be present after the wash.

Shoes go through a process of expansion and compression. Removes the laces to ensure the shoe comes back to its original shape.

  1. Moisturize leather shoes

Moisturize your leather trekking shoes with an appropriate leather moisturizer. Preferably one recommended by the manufacturer.

  1. Rolled Up News Paper

Put some rolled up newspaper balls and store the show in cool dark place. Don’t leave your shoe where it can be exposed to water.
