An ill-fitting shoe will definitely cause blisters. A shoe that is too tight or one that is too loose will cause painful blisters while on your trek because of constant abrasion.
Walking for long period of time in wet shoes or socks is usually the biggest reason people develop blisters.
There are some simple tips to dry a wet trekking shoe.
Trekking shoes that are not very breathable and do not allow for moisture to evaporate could also be another reason for blisters.
The heat generated from your feet while wearing the shoe and trekking all day causes a lot of perspiration. If your shoe is not breathable and you are not wearing moisture-wicking woolen socks, then your feet will develop blisters.
Of course, not everyone will develop blisters even if it’s a new shoe.

General Treatment for a Blister
- You may be tempted to prick or burst a blister but it’s best not to do this since the wound could get infected.
- Your doctor can drain the blister with a sterile needle for you.
- To care for the blister, Wash your hands with warm water and soap.
- Apply an antibacterial ointment on the wound.
- Cover with gauze or bandage to prevent infections.
- Clean and reapply till the wound has dried.
Steps to Treat a Blister in the Middle of A Trek?
- Stop wearing any wet socks immediately
- Use a piece of paper surgeons tape or any tape with gentle adhesive to cover the blister before it starts to grow.
- If your blister grows and burst, treat it like a wound.
- Specialised blister treatment kits are available at chemists which could be part of your first aid kit.
